don't listen to the mis-guided clowns above...
with a sturdy bench, all you need for a good workout ARE dumbbells and barbbells. they allow you to go through a natural full range of motion and utilize all your smaller stabilizing muscles. here's a good routine you can do to hit every major muscle group:
legs (quad dominant): squats - either with barbell or holding dumbbells to your side
chest/shoulders/triceps: bench press
legs (hamstrings dominant): romanian deadlift
back/biceps: bent over rows
go to exrx.net for instructions, as well as ideas for lots of other exercises.

Muscles come from doing hard work. They don't know if you are at home, on the farm, or on the job moving furniture.
The "advantage" of the gym, is large number and variety of equipment, and to some, others to be around while exercising (this could also be a negative to some).
Dumbells and barbells at home are great, but you have to ensure you give your whole body a balanced workout. Also, don't forget to build your heart and lungs with aerobic activity (stationary bike, bike around the block, run, swim, etc.). If you increase muscle in one part of your body only, you may not only look a bit misproportioned, but you may injure the less strong parts of the body that have to support the extra strength you are building. This also applies to your heart which will have to support the extra work you may chose to do with the extra muscle.
One requirement to getting those muscles are constant work. They won't come quickly, but you need to keep working, and your body will give you returns. Don't be impatient. I think yoda once said rush leads to impatience; impatience leads to drugs; drugs lead to failure. Just say no to impatience.
The fact that you like free weigths is great. Keep doing what you like.
Good luck.

Dumbells definitely increase the muscle in your arms, and barbell for your pecs. Though, you will not have the benefits of an all-round work-out. Make sure you drink protein every day, especially before you work out. Drink it in the mornings, at lunch time, and at night. You will find yourself becoming thicker, and at the same time stronger (as you work out).

Yes, if you have discipline you can work your upper body at home with free weights. You may need additional equipment if you want to work your legs.
