isn't it a shame that people today don't really remember that the US is a land where everybody's family came from somewhere else some earlier time ?
I don't know how severe your 'german anomaly' is, how old you are, or how often you are involved into conversations with others.
I can just say that at some point you adopt english that much that they understand. its just a question of time.
You remember what you said .. 'uh they had problems' ..ok, i avoid that next time, and try a different approach. Over time this process work out for you.
On the other hand, if you like to have some fun out of that ask them if you should explain that in german, or just say it right out.
what i experienced was.. first they look like this oO and start to be fascinated cause obviously you know something they don't know and out of this curiosity they are more engaged in trying to understand you.

OK, I have no idea what you want to know exactly so I'll tell you some things and you tell me what you wanted to know. Your last name comes from german "Schänke" which is tavern in English. I think it's normal that if your father is German you have a German tongue. Or don't you speak german? Those people are only trying to annoy you. You know, I've been to the US one and though my English is not really perfect, everyone understood me. And you're even a native speaker. When people told me "hey, your accent is really bad, i have no idea what you're talking bout" I have everytime ignored them and talked to others. Plus, I was sorta popular with my German. And with the time, I also improved my English. What I wanna say is, don't let it get you down. Don't talk to those people, ignore them and NEVER show them that you get mad!

Last I checked, American wasn't a language code. I think you mean that you speak English. . . And, do you mean you speak a little German? When dealing with people who don't understand me, I usually slow down my speech (not get louder) and gesture or draw a picture of what it is I need to get across.

I'm not sure who you mean by 'they' in your line, "They should pick on somebody else?"

Other then that, I hope I made sense.
