firstly they recognise their own dogs weak points according to the breed standard and choose a stud dog who is strong on these points. For ijnstance, if the dogs eyes are lighter than they should be, they choose a dog who has dark eyes and throw dark eyed pups. Then they compare the pedigrees to see if they match with some related names and common ancestors in the background. This is called 'line breeding'. Then they ensure that both of the dogs have been tested for any breed specific health problems like hip displaysia for instance.
This is how a stud dog is chosen by the b1tch owner.
You are aiming to breed pups which resemble as near as possible, the breed standard in looks and of course temperament too. The best dog in the world will not be placed at shows if he attacks the judge or other dogs and certainly nobody would want to use him on their b1tch.Temperament is passed on too.

First you need a thorough understanding of your breed including what it was bred to do. You then have to know the dogs you're considering - their faults and good points (according to the standard), this includes conformation, movement, temperament, everything. The idea is to pick dogs who complement each other - you never want to double up on faults. You also need to know the pedigrees of the prospective parents - their strengths and weaknesses. You analyze the pedigrees. If the dogs you're using are the result of outcrosses, it's pretty much a crap shoot. If you're breeding dogs that are the result of line breeding or in breeding you have a much better idea of what you're going to get.

What you never know until you do the breeding is which dog or b***h is going to be a good producer. You can breed an excellent example of the breed which just can't reproduce itself, but there's a litter mate which isn't the same quality but is an excellent producer.

So, basically you educate yourself as much as possible, so all the necessary health tests, then cross your fingers.

There are a lot of things that decide which 2 dogs are best to mate It dosnt depend on the dogs knowing of each other the dogs couldbe complete strangers and get on with it!! One way to decide is the size. If the male is a bit larger than the female the conclusion may be that the mum dies as herwomb isnt big enough to hold a bigger breeds pups.Another way is the breeds history. If the breed has a reputation of difficulty than it is probably not a good idea as it may affect your pair and put their lifes at risk.

What is called "Phenotype" is probably the most common.
This is typically taking your female regardless of bloodlines and breeding her to the "stud of the month" (the winningest dog at the time of the breeding) This is also commonly called "type breeding" or breeding based on the appearance of the sire and the dam.

"Genotype" breeding becomes quite complicated in that it requires a sound knowledge of the breed genetics and an understanding of how pedigrees relate to genetics. Not for the novice this more scientific approach is basically what was used to develop the various breeds that we enjoy today.

You decide based on many factors. The parentage, the health clearances, the conformation, the temperment..........there are many factors that go into deciding if a dog should be bred. And then finding the best dog to breed THAT dog to is a whole other thing!! That comes from lots of experience and sometimes some help and advice from other breeders.

I wouldn't recommend breeding with a dog. It is illegal in most states. I think Alabama might allow it though.
