Probably could be repaired but you have to weigh up the pros and cons.
I'd say if the TV is more than 3 years old, ditch it and put what you would have spent on repair (probably minimum £50) towards a new one. Remember that in 2010 we all have to go digital so unless you have digital already (or Freeview or satellite) you'll have to change then anyway!

I LOVE READING ALL THE OTHER ANSWERS!!!
They're so wrong, yet kinda close....I think they're remembering what the TV TECH told them the last time their TV Broke....
Well, you have SOUND...that means your TV has POWER...so any power supply answers are incorrect....same with Fuse answers....
You haven't rubbed your hand across the front of the Screen have you??....Turn on your TV set 1st. IF you rub your hand across it and feel the static crackling during your wipe....THAT MEANS you have Hi Voltage...
and that means your 9Volt regulator died or Video IC is dead...
IF you rub your hand across it and there IS NO CRACKLE...that mean NO Hi Voltage and your Horizontal Output Transistor is shorted.....That is VERY COMMON.
ANY OF THE ABOVE PROBLEMS ARE REPAIRABLE....Take it to an authorized repair facility for your BRAND and have them DIAGNOSE IT (bring the diagnostic charge, it's cheap)
You'll probably get out of there with about a $100 bill.....

It is not the fuse in the plug. The picture circuit has a delay in it.
This is not working right. It should be able to be repaired.
My TV when switched on has instant sound then eight hours later
(yes eight) the picture comes on.

Hi,you have a video or crt(picture tube)problem. It could be a inexpensive fix depending on which problem it is.Video would be under 100.00,closer to 75.00.Crt could be more, again depending on the problem but lets say from 75.00 to 125.00.If the picture was good before it went bad than I suspect a video probblem...I hope this helps you a little.

its not a question of the cost of parts but the labour to change those parts will be outrageous. once upon a time it was worth reparing tv's - now with cost so low to buy a new tv why spend the time , money and hassle of a repair

Possibly. Could be the power supply unit. Depending on what type of tv is it and how new it is (and how much you want to hang on to it) it could be worth fixing.
If you ask a question like that you need to give some details like model and age.

I know it sounds obvious - but have you checked the fuse? I got caught like that last year - was ready to chuck the thing out!
If not, then it's probably only worth repairing if the TVs an expensive one.
Sorry, just realised I mis-read your question. If there's sound, then can't be the fuse - duh! Apologies!
