Hi. You can make or sometimes buy a seed guard that might help. Pack food in cholla wood and wrap a few treats in newspaper pieces with twisted ends. This will help with their foraging needs. Have a nice Christmas and I hope they cut down on that habit of throwing food around.

No , dont put food on the floor, too dirty. Change the dish if your bird is just dragging his beak through the food and throwing out large amounts at one time. A deeper narrow dish will slow this down. If the bird is choosing one piece and then tossing, this is what birds do. It is their job to forage in this way. Is the bird looking for a specific piece of food, like eating fruit before the cooked mix? Put the fruit on top or in a separate dish they wont unpack the entire dish to get the bottom bit then. He needs to eat all types of food not just the favourite pieces.

What type of cage do you have? I have three parrots and two macaws. I put paper in the tray (obliviously)and then paper inside the cage. It helps because it's easier to clean. If you have parrots you know what I'm talking about. Parrots eat off the floor there just messy, I don't fight there mess anymore. I just clean there paper daily. I let them spill there food, and eat off the floor. I wouldn't put the food directly on the floor because when there on their perch they poop wherever and it's more likely to get inside there food. But if they spill some on the floor, its OK if they eat it off the floor, that's what they do. Try adding some variety in there food. Parrots get board with there food. Try adding things inside there food. I add a fruit cocktail mix, and try to give them fresh fruit daily if you can. I would put less food in their bowls as some birds just like to spill there food carelessly and not even eat it like my miniature cockatoo. So don't get annoyed with your parrots that they eat floor.

I have a goffin cockatoo that does that when he wants attention. It sounds as if you need a seed guard. Some parrots just do it to get your attention. My other 3 parrots don't do it but the cockatoo loves to. I would never think of putting his food in the bottom of his cage though. Remember that they have different personalities and give them lots of attention. But don't put food in bottom of cages.

By rule you should ALWAYS place your feeder cups above perches so that birds don't poop in their food! The reason they throw food in the bottom is because in nature they forage and hunt and choose their food, and also they might not like what you're giving them..I know one of my parrots doesn't like peanuts, and throws them to the bottom of my cage, while my other parrot loves them, so I just pick them out of his food so they don't go to waste and give them to my other one! Whatever you do though DO NOT put the food on the bottom, that is unless you want your bird to poop in its food, eat its on feces, then get Giardia an infection caused from ingesting their on crap, and then die pretty quickly from it!

Put a guard or curtain around the cage outside of the food dish area. My macaw was doing this for attention until I moved his food and water dish to the top of his cage outside of it. I realized this when I noticed that he would make it a point to make a bigger mess while I was vacuuming up his mess from the floor.

depends if you want to risk a sick bird or not. birds crap on the floor - from their perches or simply over the food if its laying around loose. also if their tails hang over a food bowl. this should be self explanatory - do you eat on the bathroom floor? food bowls should be free from contamination. the last thing you want to deal with is diarrhea or some other issue, like a dead parrot.

Most animals and birds are wasteful, but would you want your food mixed with your stool?
We Raise puppies but feed them with respect. Some just bale the food onto the floor and walk on it. Would you expect us to return the food that has been deficated on to the bowl?
