Believing in more than one God is completely contradictrory for a Christian. I would have to disagree with your first statement.

christians believe in one God only. now that's not to say that people have taken what they wanted out of the religion and made it their own such as those crazed extremists. they could very well have worshipped different Gods, but that is not christianity such as atheism is not worshipping the christian God but not the Hindu Gods.
