Anyone know how a stenograph works (used in courts).. is it letters like a typewriter or symbols or what?

It is a machine that types in short hand instead of letters. You need to be a short hand typist to use it.

it doesnt use letter like a typewriter. it only has a few keys and uses a "shorthand alphabet"

It is the usual typewriter keys - i.e. QWERTY
