Aisle, as close to the front of the plane as possible.

You wait longer to board, but big deal...the plane isn't leaving without you.

Bathroom breaks are easier if you're in the aisle.

When you land, you're among the first off. Much better than being first on.

Generally, try to select one as far forward as possible. On the DC9/Super 80 variants with two rows of seats on the port side and three rows on the starboard side, I like to get a window seat on the port side in the first 10 rows.

Boarding last is fine with me. It's usually far more comfortable sitting in the gate area waiting than crammed inside the aircraft waiting. As another mentioned, they're not leaving without you (within reason).

I'll usually ask for an exit row seat, if available. These generally give you more legroom, but take the responsibility of sitting there seriously.

You most likely won't be able to select a seat when you are booking unless you pay extra to do so. I know that Northweat Airlines you don't get to pick your seat until 24 hours before the flight unless you are gold or platinum.

I booked a flight with KLM recently. I booked them through a booking agent (priceline) and found I couldn't reserve my seats or check in online. My friend booked her seats directly on the KLM website and she was able to specify an aisle or window seat wehn she booked and could check in and reserve her seat then using the KLM website.
