Cats love nature, it's in their genes to wanna play "hunt" and "hide" so punishing them wouldn't make sense. However, most do, obviously. You can try mixing water and citrus in a bottel and spraying it onto the bottom of the tree or around the tree, or find a odorless pet off formula. Cats are stubborn and you can spray em at first but after awhile it wont do anything, they'll jus keep coming back. But if you find something that they dont wannt go near that should help. Call your vet, they might have an idea also.

Close the door of the room where the tree is. don't let them get in there while you sleep. There is really no other way. We don't decorate a tree because we have a cat, you have 4, well, if you want a tree, in Greece we say " He who has a beard must also have a comb" (meaning if you want to have something difficult, like cats AND tree, you must be ready to find a solution, or give up on the tree).

Well you could try spreading some aluminum foil out around the base of the tree, alot of cats don't like stepping on it. One thing I used, my nephew had a toy spy kit that had a motion sensor toy that made a loud alarm noise. I set it next to the garbage can, whenever the cat tried to get into it the alarm went off. The links below have some christmas cat-proofing ideas

Put the cats "to bed" for the night in a separate room.
Only 2 more days....then you can put the tree away.

Lock them in the bathroom at night. You can put food in their with them. It won't hurt them to stay in there at night. Or if you don't want them to mess up anything in the bathroom or you feel bad about it, put them outside. Cats like being outside anyways unless it is too cold.
