Myth #2:He was considered a great traveling teacher and master.
Truth:There is no evidence of this in Mithraic literature.Even if there was, does it matter?
Myth #3:He had 12 companions or disciples.
Truth:The Iranian Mithras, had a single companion (Varuna), and the Roman Mithra had two helper/companions, tiny torch-bearing likenesses of himself, called Cautes and Cautopatres, that were meant to represent the sunrise and sunset, spring and autumn, the stars Albedaran and Antares ,or life and death.
Myth#4:Mithra's followers were promised immortality.
Truth:The only evidence of a "salvational" ideology is a piece of graffiti found in the Santa Prisca Mithraeum ,dated no earlier than 200 AD, that reads, "And us, too, you saved by spilling the eternal blood."(the blood of the bull Mithras slayed).

Please note:I am not trying to insult anyone who belives in Mithra.I am trying to debunk the claims made by some people that Christianity copied off the story of Mithra, when that is patently untrue.

I know about Mithra. That's the point. Some people are listening to claims that Christianity copied of Mithra made by people who don't know anything about Mithra at all.Like I said earlier:this isn't made to hurt the story of Mithra.I wrote this because some people who just copied claims off ceratin websites have no idea about the real story of Mithra.

You know, this is getting a bit irritating. These Mithra claims are made to people who continuously claim that Christians copied of Mithra.Wouldn't you get a bit irritated if someone kept making false claims?

I am sorry if this was annoying to you,but I am only trying to tell people their misconceptions about the story of Mithra & Christianity.

So whats your point?

Are you trying to prove they fiddled with the Mithra myth as much as they fiddled with the Jesus myth?

The religions centered around Mithra changed vastly over the very long time it was active - and if you compare the version that was followed by Roman soliders just before Christianity was adopted by Rome, you'll find a religion that is strikingly similar enough to have some people call them the same. And it does seem possible (or even likely) that Christianity as we know it was a merging of the two religions.

If you compare what we now know as Christianity to the earlier versions you'll find a few common elements of symbolism, and a few other commonalities - but not alot.

It's been more than a few years since I covered any of this in college, but my recall is there was quite a bit more evidence on the facts than as presented above... in fact, lacking any of the orginal texts that are considered the basis of Christianity, it could be considered a great deal more documented as history.

As a religion though, I am not sure it ultimately matters, as this is about faith and belief. And be it the bible or other religious document, it's still words relayed and translated by men, and as such, many details are going to be wrong. Hopefully though, the core message survives.

I wonder if you've heard the saying about "flogging a dead horse", Serena?

Seems like that's what you're trying to do here, I'm sorry.

Before I saw this question, I didn't even know there was something called Mithra-ism.

So, if it's an awareness program that you're embarking on, then, you're doing a good job. Whereas, if it is de-bunking that's your aim, then refer to [1].

Merry Christmas!!!!

All the stuff you've read about Mithra and the Mithranian religion is true. And yes, it DOES bear a striking resemblence to Christianity.

Have a look at the wiki page for Mithraism

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mithraism

Hope that helps to clear things up about the true meaning of Christmas

What so because he didn't have his disciples write down every detail of his life you think that it never happened?

i bet if you look hard enough in the "Bible" you will find a spot that says "And today Jesus Pooped" :)

And Mithra didnt slay the bull of the Sun, He was the bull of the Sun, he sacrificed himself on the Cross, For us, then he rose again three days later.

IF YOU ARE ANNOYED BY THIS. THEN THE MORE WE SHOULD BE ANNOYED BY INSISTING THAT CHRIST DIED FOR THE SINS OF MANKIND. CHRIST CAME ONLY FOR THE LOST SHEEP OF ISRAEL AS HE SAID THAT IN THE GOSPEL OF MATTHEW. HIS LAST INSTRUCTION IN MARK THAT SAID, "GO AND SPREAD THE WORD IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, THE SON AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT" WAS NEVER PART OF THE EARLY MANUSCRIPT.
IF EVER JESUS WAS PUNISHED BY THE ROD AND FLOGGED BY HIS OWN MEN (THE JEWS) WAS BECAUSE HE COMMITTED BLASPHEMY BY CLAIMING HE IS THE SON OF GOD ANDDESCRATED THE OBSERVATION OF SABBATH.
IF EVER HE WAS CRUCIFIED, IT WAS BECAUSE HE CAME TO BE A THREAT TO THE ROMAN EMPIRE AS A POPULAR REBEL FIGURE INSISTING ON MONOTHEISTIC PRACTICE OF RELIGION WHICH WAS VERY ROMAN AND MITHRA CAME TO BE ONE OF THEIR MYTHICAL GODS.
