Need more info...

Do you want cheap, expensive? Do you want dry or sweet? Do you want it for a particular meal?

I wine taste as a hobby..live in Napa Valley...just need a bit more info to help you out.

Here are some ideas...(ones that you will be able to find quite easily)

For a good Cab, try Caymus
(also a good Merlot)

For a good Blend, try Opus One A(It is by Mondavi)...and yes it is over commercialized, but it is a winner! (Unlike Silver Oak wines! Overrated for sure)

Oh, and some personal faves-probably more difficult to find:

Pride Mountain Merlot
Hook & Ladder Zinfadel --the 3rd Alarm one
Pina Cab-yummy

Cheaper ones:
Dynamite Merlot ($11)
Gyser Peak Merlot ($17)
Magnet Pinot ($25)

I'm not a wine expert. I go with what tastes the best. I have tried many merlot wines and have discovered an inexpensive wine that happens to be better than expensive California merlots. It may be the volcanic soil there, but wine from Chile, South America is fantastic. Conche y Torro is the brand I buy from Sams Club. It's about 7 bucks for a 1.75 liter bottle.

Well, i know a really great red wine that has been in the market for more than 500 years, its made in the state of Cohauila in the north of Mexico, the producer is called "CASA MADERO" and i can tell that is a great wine, i have tasted french, californian, australian, but nothing compares to the taste of this one. the good thing is that its not expensive at all, you can find a bottle for 15 bucks, but the bad thing is that you may find some trouble to find it.

good luck!

hmmm.... that is a somewhat ridiculous question as it is all a matter of taste and preference. Personally I don't think you can beat a good Merlot (French) but there are many who prefer other varieties of red. your best bet is to get out there and try a variety of red wines to see which you prefer. Your best bet is probably to find a wine tasting or wine and cheese evening going on somewhere in your area ad pop along.

I have a favorite dessert wine that is a red. It is Kokopelli's Sweet Lucy. Its not too sweet but you can drink it with something or by itself. I live in Arizona, and it is brewed out here. I don't know if it is available where you are. I have found it in Cost Plus World Trade stores and some Sprouts markets.

It says Shiraz on the bottle. Some people say it is off the market wine, and some say it isn't red wine. But any wine works for me..

if you're looking to splurge a bit, why not go for a '96 barolo? '93 - '98 are good vintages, and the price range varies, so you'll have a lot of choices there. i think '99 onwards aren't drinkable just yet. but you can't go wrong with barolo.

not sure if you're new to reds, but in case you (or your guests) are... get a lambrusco (trader joe's sells a good one for ~$4). always a party favorite.
