Hi Sue,
you don't need a guru for spiritual guidance, although if you can afford the luxury of devoting your time and money to a guru you may certainly find a guru who may be a rewarding experience.
One issue of course is how to find a guru you can trust.
Because of the nature of spiritual knowledge or wisdom it's a simple matter to deceive yourself or be deceived by others and you may wind up in situation that may be unhealthy for you.
The answer to finding a guru you can trust is to trust in yourself to be your own teacher Sue.
We already possess everything we need to know within ourselves, we just need to open up the channels within ourselves that allow us to access our infinite hidden knowledge.
There are lots of ways to do that including prayer or meditation, and occult studies like yoga or reiki or tarot, etc...
Look for self-help books to get started and listen to your heart as you search. Your heart will know when you have found something helpful, you will get a tingly feeling from head to toe that is popularly known as resonance. When something resonates with you it has something you will value in it.
I have had several teachers in my life and benefited from each of them. One teacher I saw only once but he helped to send me on a 7 year astral journey 29 years ago which I am still learning from today. His name was Baba Ram Dass. I might like to go see him again some day.
You are welcome to come join the spiritual community I belong to online at the Ascension Network: http://www.ascension.net We have a free chatroom and forums with lots of lovely people.

Go and search ... you'll eventually come back to the place you started - to your heart.
But until you do, travelling and soaking up wisdom is cool. Nepal or Thailand would be the best places to go if you are into Buddhism. India is a bit iffy because there are lots of counterfeit swamis who take advantage of the unexperienced spiritual traveller. Buddhist countries are far better in that way. At least you know these people are honest. And if you even don't find a guru, you'll get to know a culture which is (as to philosophy and ethics) far superior to the Western one. You'll see spirituality in action when you interact with the people.
Go! My blessings!

You can simply ask God to transform your life and bring light into your life. You just pray and meditate a lot to understand the lessons you will be given. I asked this long ago, and God has made me a better, more sensitive person. You don't need a guru, you already are. You must beleive that what you seek to become is attainable by YOU and you are the only one who can do it. God (light) shows the way and gives lessons/hardships to help you grow and develop. Sometimes the answers won't be given straight away. We are the ones who must choose to accept the hard right over the easy left and do the work on ourself. It doesn't make us better to choose to be better people, it just sets us apart from people choosing not to strive for the light. It is a free will choice any human can make, and we have the right to do so.

why would you need to travel to be guided? Spirituality is an inside job I mean. Travelling is fun but not really anything to do with spirituality

Try the course in miracles Susiee. There are groups that meet all over the country. If there is not a group close to you I could help you get started. It is possible to study it on your own if you have someone to help you with the difficult passages.

Everyone else is giving you advice on where to go. I'm going to give you advice on where NOT to go. Don't visit Islam. Cat Stevens used to be a peaceful man, but converted to Islam and now he's a fukking terrorist named Yusuf Islam.
Johnny Walker Lindh converted to Islam, look at what happened to him.
Adam Gadahn converted to Islam, look at him.
Richard Reid the shoe bomber was a thug early in his life and spent some time in prison. It was there in prison where his violent tendencies naturally gravitated him to Islam. Ironically, his interest in Islam landed him back in jail for trying to blow up a plane with some explosives in his footwear.

Do not believe something simply because you have heard it. Do not believe anything simply because it has been handed down for many generations. Do not believe anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe anything simply because it is written in Holy Scriptures. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of teachers, elders, or wise men. Believe only after careful observation and analysis, when you find that it agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all. Then accept it, and live up to it.
