It depends on what it is that they are bringing. A bottle of scotch? Perhaps not. Sometimes I bring my own bottle of diet coke, because one side of the family has only sugary sodas.
The other side of the family only has caffeinated sodas, so if it is a evening event, and I don't want to be up all night, I bring my own bottle of decaf soda.
I bring bottled water (or refilled from my filtered tap) everywhere I go, because straight tap water scares me, for some strange reason.
I really think it's okay to tend to your own needs at a party. You never know what dietary needs other people have. People have allergies to wheat, nuts, dairy, and also there are vegans, vegetarians - whatever.... give them a break.

Unless you've brought a special beverage because you are unable to partake of any others already present, it is extremely rude to open what you've brought yourself.
I might as well mention that if you've brought food to a pot luck, you never dish some out for yourself until you are sure that everyone else has already had a chance to have some.

Unless it's a "bring your own bottle" BBQ, it is rude. It should be offered to others before they serve themselves. Cheers!

When you bring something to any gathering, youre supposed to present it to the host immediately. They should then open it and offer it. But I would think that it is rude to bring something you obvioulsy brought for only yourself. If you want to do that, do it but also bring something for everyone and dont expect the host to keep it chilled for you.

It would depend on the formality of the event, and the intimacy of the group. I have guys over all the time who bring their own poison - and start drinking right away.

I always bring my own bottle/can of Diet Coke when visiting certain friends, they don't have it, and I don't expect them to get some in for me. I usually bring enough to share with others who might want some, though.
