I recommend after a child is somewhat securely able to read, around 6 or 7 years. You shouldn't have to be confused with reading music and english, and you should NOT start a child with memorization. Once they are confident with english (talk with their teachers) then I would consider starting them on lessons.....and make sure to allow them not only to pick the instrument, but that they actually are interested! Trust me, pushing a kid into anything is never a good result. And, this is a lot of work. Good luck!!

It depends on what instrument the child is playing and on the child. Some children, if they have an instrument that is adapted to their size and the will to learn can start on an instrument as young as four. However a four year old could not begin to play a full size piano or violin, or most instruments at that age due to the size. Most public schools begin instruction at the age of nine. They feel children at that age can handle the responsibility of practice and care of the instrument.

If you have a child who is interested in a particular instrument and you feel your child may be ready to start lessons, I think the best thing to do is have your child evaluated by a teacher of that instrument. Call the music department of the school near you and ask for private teacher recommendations. They usually have a list available. Many music stores also have rentals available, especially if you need small sizes such as a 1/4 or 1/2 size stringed instrument. That is a good way to see if your child will like the instrument and the responsibility that goes along with playing an instrument without putting a lot of money into it first. The school may also be able to point you to a store that has a rental program.

Good luck in your search! Giving your child the gift of music is a lifelong treasure.

When they show an interest. We have several instruments around, lots of shakers, whistles, etc. A general guide line is 5 for girls, and 7 for boys. Not because girls are "smarter" but boys benefit from experimenting longer before formal training.

They start to get an interest when they are in kindergarten, but i would not start until 1st or second grade because i think they will under stand more and listen to the teacher better that when they are younger.

Hint you don't want to force them because you will just be wasting your money on something that he/she doesn't want to do.

I think Kindergarden would be the best age. I mean the sooner the better because if you start young you will be very good when you are older.
