I have been unable to figure out whether or not to capitalize atheist there doesn't seem to be a convention. Insomuch as it is professed as a lack of belief I often decide not to capitalize, should I capitalize it like it was a religion?

It seems unimportant since I'm usually looking at it from my point of view. I don't know if any god exists or if it would be THE God everyone always talks about. I naturally don't think of it as a proper noun so I often don't capitalize the 'g'. I'm usually referring to the idea of one, so it would be 'a god' not 'God'. Same reason I never capitalize 'him' since I'm only using that word as general reference. If I'm speaking directly about the one in the bible, I will use the upper case 'G'.

I think some people are just doing it to prove a point though.

Why didn't you use a large " a " in stead of a small " a "? Some people don't believe they are being graded on this, so they don't bother with correct capitalization.

Or, to them God is an object, not a person.

At first blush, I'd say that it's part of their egotistical make-up and it is also a sign of their disrespect for a *particular* "god" or "gods" [of certain/all Christians maybe?] that they refuse to or DO NOT believe in at all...

But I PREFER TO THINK that the *real reason* behind it is that they have YET to meet the unnamed, One True God that remains hidden within their hearts...

Peace be with you.

Do you mean a proper name like George or Sam or Frank? Maybe they just don't believe that anybody has the proper name God.

If a person respects God, they will capitalize any word referring to Him. Because He is God and we should respect Him. See? Atheists don't see, they don't understand, they don't care, they just want to be obnoxious. It's their nature to be irreverent. It makes them feel superior. It helps cover their fear and envy.

Sad isn't it. Even if they don't believe He exists, it's still grammatically correct to use an uppercase G when making a reference involving a proper noun.

Little g, signifies that he is not important, being that God or god are titles , it makes God in their eyes insignificant.---They tolerate the subject of an Almighty, because they cannot make it go away

It's not a proper noun if there isn't a god.

Although you can argue that other fictional characters get capital letters.
