Oh gosh, I know your pain! I have a dog who has colitis from time to time and has needed the prednisone to get it under control.
Although the prednisone can cause problems, ongoing colitis definitely does! Your veterinarian knows what he/she's doing and hopefully answers all of your questions. If you feel he/she is incompitent, seek the advice of another vet.
Good luck to you!

Sometimes it is the lesser of two evils at the time. IBS has many problems and steroids can help. However, there are many long term side effects of steroid use.
It is a hard choice to make, but sometimes the relief from the steroids for as long as possible is the best choice. Then worry about the rest later.
