Well, Caitlin, I question whether you have left out some of what your doctor said. I think it strange a doctor says " go and lose weight" without giving you some kind of diet or something. SO my first suggestion is to talk to whoever went to the doctor visit with you and decide exactly how the doctor described for you to lose weight.

If the doctor did not give you any more specifics than that, then I suggest you get a second opinion, and a clearance from the doctor to exercise. Only after you have been declared healthy and cleared to exercise, I think the following will help you:

Change your lifestyle and do this forever. Drink lots of water, walk or swim an hour every day except 1 then do stretching and upper body toning. Eat fruits & vegetables.

No alcohol
no bread
no burgers
No candy
No chips
no corn
no fried foods
No pasta
No pizza
No potatoes
No sodas
No sugar

Good Luck

Walk to some co-worker's desk to chat as opposed to instant messaging.

In the mood for some sort of hot meal? Make a huge pot of veggie bean soups, divide into two-cup containers, and store from the freezer. Before bed, place a container within the fridge, then grab it before heading out the door in the morning.

Eat in front of a person rather than a screen. It cuts down on mindless eating and makes you more accountable for each mouthful.

avoid eating junk food and anything that contains tons of sugar, you totally have to read the labels.
Look at the ingredients, avoid glucose, bleached flour..etc.
avoid soda and juice, drink water and milk ( I always have a tall glass of milk before any meal and it sorta fills me up a little so I eat less)
since you probably 'don't' work out, try taking a 30min walk 5 days a week. Grab some headphones and wing it.
You can also do the "special k diet". lose up to 7 or 8lbs in a week.

Try walking maybe around your neighborhood or at a track at your school....also avoid eating candy, potato chips and definitely fried foods. If you stick to a diet of meat and vegetables only. You might be able to loose 15 lbs by the time you return to the doctor. Stay away from carbs. Mashed potatoes with lots of butter, white breads, cut your meals down. Best of luck to ya & Merry Christmas.

For sandwich-lovers, use spinach or swiss chard leaves rather than a wrap, skip the portion of cheese, and load up on the veggies.
