How many times does this rumour have to go around the world? I remember hearing it since I was a teenager, and it has always been wrong. The rating group for a car is determined by make, model, year, etc, and the variables include where you live, what you use the vehicle for, and your driving record. When you call for an insurance quote, colour is not asked. And when you go to register and insure that vehicle, they don't go "oh you didn't say it's red - cha ching!". Take it from me, I am an insurance broker. I also do registrations and driver licences, and I enter the colour when you plate and insure the vehicle, until then I don't know and I don't care. I don't care about the colour of your house when I quote insurance for that, and I don't charge you more for your driver licence if you have red hair, either. As an isurance broker, do you think I would be driving a red car myself if it cost me more to insure?

No, its not true.

Insurance companies don't ask for this or for your license plate number when you get insured, because they are too easy to change. Otherwise, you can insure a blue car, insure it, and then paint it red.

Studies have shown that people with red cars are significantly more likely to get into accidents though.

No. You do not pay a higher insurance rate based on the color of your car. It's the type of car you drive, your gender, your marital status, how far you drive to work, how many accidents you've been in, discounts for taking driving classes, where you live...and some other factors I can't think of off the top of my head. NOT the color of your car.

No truth to that at all! Most insurance companies don't even ask the color -- and it can't be determined from the VIN. In 38 years of driving, I've never been asked the color on an insurance application.

NO. I have been in the insurance industry for 20+ years and I can tell you with 100% confidence that the color of a vehicle makes NO difference in rating.
