The zoo is good and usually a hit with kids, OMSI is also great for Kids and indoors. Go up to Government Camp by Mt Hood and there is a great sledding area but there. Also, there are many community centers around town (depending on where you live) with great indoor pools (check out the Southwest community center for example). In the summer time, the Japanese Garden and Chinese Garden are both really interesting, although more for adults than kids 2 and 5.

Oregon is a beautiful state. Have you tried going online? I live in Tennessee, and I went online to find a place for my little sister's 16th birthday, I found a lot of caves and stuff that even offer overnight stays. Also try a local truck stop or rest area, no not for the date, but most of the time they have those little travel pamphlets or area wide travel destinations, they have a lot of really fun places to see according to what your family enjoys doing. Amusement parks are always fun, and if your short on cash try an arcade. I know an arcade doesn't sound like something an adult might enjoy, but most have go carts and games tailored to adults. Along with batting cages and even toddler friendly games. I know that my children love to go the park, they can play on the equipment and feed the ducks/fish. We also love family game night, that can be a little daunting if you toddlers which I do, but even hi ho Cherie o or shutes and ladders can bring a smile to any mommy or daddies face.

Try a game of bumper bowling for a rainy day. Young children can do it and adults can also have fun doing it. It's a great thing to do if you can't make it outside.
For an outdoor activity try a family bike ride. If you live in a nice area, a bike ride on a local trail will be the perfect fun filled day. It is something fun and healthy that everyone can enjoy.

I recommend you pick up a copy of "Fugitives and Refugees: A Walk in Portland, Oregon" by Chuck Palahniuk.
"Here are strange personal museums, weird annual events, and ghost stories. Tour the tunnels under downtown Portland. Visit swingers’ sex clubs, gay and straight. See Frances Gabe’s famous 1940s Self-Cleaning House. Look into strange local customs like the I-Tit-a-Rod Race and the Santa Rampage. Learn how to talk like a local in a quick vocabulary lesson. Get to know, I mean really get to know, the animals at the Portland zoo."
