Hi Connie...consider asking your vet for a oral flea medication called Capstar. http://www.ah.novartis.com/products/en/cab/capstar.shtml
Some people find using Dawn dish liquid and a flea comb are safer alternatives even though it's more work and has to be done weekly--any more than this and it can be drying to the cat's skin and fur. However, it's important to also treat your home for flea infestation as well. Vacuuming frequently and disposing of the cannister or bag each time is necessary to eliminate the eggs fromn hatching and the fleas jumping out of these.
Garlic should never be given to cats as it causes hemolytic anemia in cats and can be fatal. Any vet can confirm this fact.

You may want to talk with your vet. Advantage and Frontline are great products and should not cause a reaction like being "hyper" she may just not like having them put on. there are also several pills that can be broken up and mixed in their food. You may simply need to try a few products (one of my cats has skin allergies but we found that Revolution doesn't bother him as much).
You can try using a flea comb on her daily and treating your environment instead of the cat if you are really concerned about reactions. A bath in dawn or palmolive, or a labeled cat flea shampoo may help. You can treat the environment with vaccuming, flea bombs (remove cat before fumigating!), spraying the yard etc.

My MIL has a cat that roams free, inside and out. Since they live in the woods out in the country, they have all kinds of bugs to watch out for, like fleas and deer ticks. The best, and most natural way, that she's found to fight off the buggers is to put a very small sprinkle of garlic powder in her moist food once a day. (She also has dry food available at all times.) The taste of the garlic gets into the cat's skin and the bugs can't stand it. If they do bite, they don't hold on. It works very well and there's no chemicals to worry about. Good Luck!!

believe it or not , get a piece of a banana tree stalk and cut it into small pieces and place them where they can't be seen.
It will get rid of the fleas.
I guess they don't like the smell ( which you can't smell )
Try it !
