That would have been the old Church of St. James.....
James, Brother of Christ, founded a Church based upon esoteric Judaism, accepting Christ as the Messiah, with the concept of rebirth, from his time spent in the east with Buddhists, thrown in.
These teachings were largely destroyed by the Church of St. Peter (the Roman Church) and James was murdered by Peter's successor. It would be worthwhile trying to piece this religion back together, but I know of no one who has ever tried.

if you need a crutch to get through life, then pick one.
they are all myths. go for the one that makes you feel like you are in control of something in your life. it won't be true, but if being mindless is what makes you happy, go for it.
