Windows Vista is not free, even if you have Windows XP. You will have to pay for an upgrade. But why would you? If you already have Windows XP, don't bother to upgrade just yet, unless you desperately want some kind of Vista-only functionality (though I would not know what kind that would be).
You ask if there are any alternatives. Of course! There's always OSX, from Apple, but you need a Mac to run that (well, actually, you can get it to run on a normal PC, but that's difficult.). But Linux seems to meet the requirement of 'free'. It doesn't cost you a dime, and never will. If you're new, I suggest you try Ubuntu.

You can download their CD image there, burn it to CD, pop it in and try it out. You don't have to install Ubuntu to test it! So you can give it a try safely, if you're interested.

I'd agree entirely with the previous responder. Personally, I'm not yet happy that Vista is bug-free, and I've no intention of paying a lot of money (which you will have to when the proper version comes out) just for some more bells and whistles. XP's fine.

If you want to explore a Linux distrubtion, as my predecessor says, burn a "live" disk of Unbuntu's ISO files, then you can change your boot priorities and run it directly from CD, nothing installed & no problems if you don't like it.

i am currently using the vista beta build 5600 and to be honest i would stick to xp for at least the next 12 months
vista needs massive amounts of ram to function correctly, although microsoft say 512mb is enough,i would say 2gb is a more realistic amount, and also a decent graphic card is required, such as a ge-force 6600 or a a.t.i radeon x800
some systems built in the last few months come with free vista upgrades, however you need to check with the system manufacturer, these p.c,s will have a sticker on them saying"vista capable"
hard drive space required for a vista installation is 20gb or more
good luck
