There are alot of great arthritis medications that you can get from your vet. A glucosamine/chondrotin supplement is a great addition and can be bought over the counter. I prefer Synovi G3 or Cosequin. Providing soft bedding is essential for arthritic dogs. If they are really stiff on a cold day I will put down a heated blanket to help warm up their joints and then give them a nice massage. Exercise is good, just start slow and don't over tax them. In a pinch you can give coated baby aspirin. but it is not as effective as a prescription drug and can cause stomach upset (the first link has information and doses). Never give Tylenol!

Canine arthritis can be treated pretty effectively with a mixture of:
Glucosamine: 500 mg
Chondroitin: 400 mg
MSM: 500 mg
Manganese: 10 mg

Also, your Vet may recommed 1 aspirin (depending on body weight) every day. Keep him/her up and moving so joint range of motion stays good.

The link below will lead you to the place where I buy my supplies, but any reputable Vet Supply will do. Just check the label and make sure of the ingredients before you purchase. Hope this helps.

There are a lot of things that will help. Try to do as much of the following as you can:
1. A warm bed- if you can't afford a heated bed just yet, a hot water bottle, or a warm spot will help.
2. The doctor will prescribe glucosamin supplements- or you can get some from petsmart- it is called the missing link. It helps with joint trouble.
3. Mix warm canned food with kibble. It will stimulate his appetite.
4. Walk him on grassy or carpeted surfaces as much as possible. There are ramps that will help him get up and down raised surfaces if he does that.
5. Give him plenty of affection. It helps ease some of the pain.

If you are looking for some pain relief you can give regular asprin when you feed.
Give 1/4 tablet per 10 pounds of body weight.
I start my 70 pound dogs off with one tablet and if that does not help I give another half. One usually works fine.
You can give it twice per day with food.
If you are looking for something long term talk to your vet about some of the new meds they have available but until you can get to the vet the asprin will work and it is safe for dogs in the above doseages.

if your dog is stiff in the morning, give him an opportunity to walk it out; don't fawn all over him, coaxing him with treats to get up and go outside. Keep an eye on him so you know when he's ready to go outside so he doesn't have an accident in the house.

Make sure he has a rug or bed to call her own. Then, when she doesn't want to lie on the floor, she has a softer surface to choose. If she sleeps in a crate, put a pad or thick blanket on the bottom.

A visit to the vet. Our dog has arthritis (mild) and we are controlling it with a medication that can only be prescribed by a vet.

I would go to the vet. My dog had to take half an asprin every day for awhile. The Vet will let you know.
