There are many dogs that are good watch dogs- in that they will bark and warn you someone is coming. Some dogs do this because they are protective, and some dogs are just so excited someone is coming to visit (play time!). IMO, A watch dog is good, a guard dog is not as good- as they might not distinguish between good strangers and bad strangers, and unless you are an experienced dog owner, you will have a law suit or worse on your hands.

Good watch dogs that are small- Lhasa Apsos guarded monateries- and will bark at intruders as will almost all terriers. If you have kids in the house, terriers are not the best.

Good watch dogs that are medium- Boxers, all the working and herding dogs are vigilant. They also make good playmates for people in the house. Herding dogs (German shepherds, Collies etc) are so smart that you will have to make their mental stimulation a priority or they will climb walls.

Large dogs need not even be watch dogs, people who see them get worried by their sheer size! Though most of them are sweet dogs.

Your best resource would be www.yourpurebredpuppy.com that will give you details on every dog. She has a great book as well that will tell you exercise, grooming requirements, size, affinity with children as well as watch dog/guard dog level proficiencies. You can get it second hand at amazon.com for less than 5 bucks.

Shetland Sheep Dog. They look like a little "Lassie". They are extremely intelligent and very easy to train. They are very alert and will let you know if they hear anything unusual. They really don't shed and you only have to deal with hair when they "blow" their coat a couple times a year. A couple of good combings takes care of that. Sheltie Rescue is a good place to look to find a dog that is already past the puppy chewing everything stage and housebroken. And you help give a home to a needy dog if you go through Rescue. Jack Russell. I have a 2 1/2 year old and now 3 of her puppies that are left. She thinks shes bigger than our 2 outside golden retrievers, and she sounds like it too. She goes crazy when someone we dont know is at the door, and lets us know when anyone pulls in the driveway. A wire-haired doesn't shed much, but she is soft and very small for a jack, and I just love her to death. They sometimes will take longer to housetrain, but we have a string of bells at the back door that she rings when she wants out. They are very intelligent and love to be trained to do stuff like spinning in circles on their hind feet or "singing". Jacks don't typically chew on things as long as they have something OK to chew on, such as a bone from a butchery. They are great obedience dogs, she got grand champion in county and placed at state fair. They are great family dogs, and good for just one person. Definitely give a jack a chance!

French Bulldogs, they will bark like a watchdog but are not yappy like some breeds.

I also like Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Pyrenees, Great Danes, and Bullmastiffs.

First I have to laugh at Pomeranien being suggested for a watch dog! LOL Okay...

Now... we have a Golden Retriever. He's a great, loyal dog, but will chew someones a$$ faster than you can shake a stick if they tried to harm us in any way. He always alerts us when someone is here.

Outside...consider this. Anything that will sheild them from the wind, rain and cold, and is high enough off the ground to keep the rainwater from coming in. If the dog house is insulated, then it's that much better. If your dog is a strictly "outside" dog, putting hay in their dog house will also help keep them warm. Don't be stingy with the hay. A bale of hay should last you all winter long for the dog's bedding.

Pomeraniem. They are a big dog in a lttle dog's body. Meaning... easy upkeep but they'll chew up anyone trying to break in.

You might want a German Sheperd or Jack Russell Terrier. They are very good about keeping watch.
