HIV (Human Immunodeficiency virus) is the name of the virus that causes AIDS (the illness). You can be an HIV carrier and infect others while you still do not develop AIDS.
You can protect y-self by education and responsibility. Know which are high-risk behaviors, find out the meaning of false negative. There is plenty of information available via Internet, local Health Clinic and your physician.
If you are going to have casual sex always wear condoms etc... Best, wait and stay in a monogamous relationship in which both feel the same way as far a selectivity and responsibility.

AIDS- Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
HIV- Human Immunodeficiency Virus
You can protect yourself by wearing a condom (preferably the male), female condoms don't work as good, and not sharing needles with someone else. If you think you got infected, then get tested ASAP, some people walk around with HIV for almost 15 years and don't even know about it. Note: AIDS takes as little as 10 years to form. Hope that helps.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is the virus that causes AIDS. The virus was identified in 1983.
AIDS = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome it is a condition that results from advanced HIV infection which weakens the immune system leaving the body less able to fight infections.
AIDS (a result of HIV infection) is caused by a virus (HIV) that spreads through sex-vaginal, oral, or anal- and blood-to-blood contact with infected people. HIV cannot spread from person to person by casual everyday contact.
Are condoms effective?
Used correctly and consistently, latex condoms help protect people from HIV and other sexually transmitted germs. Although they greatly reduce the risk of infection, they are not 100 percent effective. Condom failure usually result from improper use.

AIDS is aquired immune defficiency syndrome.
HIV is human immuno deficiency virus.
We can protect ourselves by using condoms during sex and by preventing the transfer of body fluids such as blood from an infected person to ourselves. Saliva contains a minute concentration of HIV compared with blood or semen and also HIV is destroyed by stomach acid so kissing in the absense of bleeding gums is relatively safe.

Live a clean life, i.e. sex with your opposite-sex partner in marriage only, no drug habits with needles and you'll be 99.9 per cent protected.
I also am careful where I go out to eat, or what doctor or dentist I go to (I usually ask if he's "family man" if I'm unfamiliar with him).
