Creative and artistic individuals are more sensitive to the pain of the world therefore they are more likely to seek ways to get away from the pain.

This is an interesting question. I too think more creative material seems to come from drug addicts. I'm not so sure it's the addiction which directly causes the creativity however. I think there is more to it... for instance, when someone is an alcoholic it may have something to do with depression in their life, same goes for drug addicts. Now obviously this isn't always the case. It is a known fact however that deep emotional pain and suffering has inspired some of the most amazing creativity. So I look at the addictions and creativity as more of a result of the pain and suffering. Basically, in my opinion the addiction doesn't directly cause the creativity it's the suffering, and the addiction may cause or prolong the suffering, thus bringing about more creativity, if that makes any sense.

It's more the other way around. It's going to sound stupid, but a lot of creative people are very emotional, sensitive, etc.. Sometimes people like that have more problems with depression that can lead to drug/alcohol abuse. Any 'type' of person can have an addictive personality though. It may be true that a lot of creative people are addicts but not all addicts are creative.

There is no good standard for measuring creativity. One person's creativity may be another person's garbage. In addition, people can become more creative if you just ask them to be more creative.

As a general rule, people who have drug problems also have emotional issues. Therefore, they tend to do things that are different than the rest. That difference may be viewed as creativity or just plain deviance.

Then there are the effects of environment. Even if you aren't very creative, if you happen to be in a rock band you may be exposed to a world where partying with no thought to tomorrow is the norm.

Finally, one should note that there are a lot of people with drug problems in the world, so they will be found most anywhere.

When I was on drugs I could write poetry like you would not believe and now that I am clean I can't write a poem to save my life and I have tried.. I spend hours just thinking of things to "express" myself and I can't so you probably have something there but in no way am I authorizing anybody to EVER use drugs or alcohol to allow their talents to come thru.. Yes, I found my poetic abilities but I suffer a lot of health problems and financial, etc. because of my decision to use drugs. I don't think there are that many people addicted..it is the same people who keep relapsing..I relapsed many times..Relapse occurs in every 9 of 10 people

Well, it isn't that the drug makes the person more crative, but It like frees them, like for example, I write and sing, and I don't drink... but I met this guy and blah blah blah, the thing is that I had to move, and we aren't going to see each other again, I wrote him a poem, I had three glasses of red wine, and like I don't drink, they made me more liberated, I wrote things that i wouldn't have been sober, I got more deep, and serious, and I wasn't cheese but loving...

Humans tend to hide or block some emotions, that normally we would want to show but for some reason we don't, and alcohol seems to help, getting them out, I don't know about other drugs, I guess it works the same... But I don't think is necesary to use drug to be able of being creative... We just have to let go of everything and look deep inside so we understand how we feel.

I work in a rehab center with both drug addicts (heroin, meth, cocaine, MJ, pills, ect.) and alcoholics. From what I see, I think it is just that so many people are addicted. I have seen drawings, read stories, ect. that our clients have created which are astounding, but have also seen non-addicts be just as talented. Addicts, unfortunately, see a lot of the world that we don't. Dealing, stealing, prostituting, $, they tend to have a completely different lifestyle they are exposed to, as well as what they may "see" when high. We have clients who sometimes see the walls "breathing". How I imagine that and how you imagine that could be completely different.

yeah most alcoholics aren't usually more creative, just more depressed. but there are a lot of drug addicts that are more creative because they have less inhibitions, they see things they aren't supposed to and are able to express things more creatively than a lot of others

Sure they are creative liars. If your an addict it becomes harder and harder to cover up the drinking and drug use so you lie and lie and lie and have to come up with creative ways to get your next fix and ways to cover up your addiction.

I think it depends. I'm a musician and I have tried to write songs sober and not sober.

When I am sober I find I want to make sure everything is perfect and is in sync and has a meaning...

When I'm not sober it's just about the music...

But I think once you start depending on the drugs or alcohol your music starts depending on it too and you find yourself writing about drugs and alcohol because that's all you believe in.
