since there is no draft at the moment you have nothing to worry about and i doubt there will be a draft soon even if they increase the size of the military, we want volunteers. If you are an only child and it is up to you to carry on the family name you can request an exeption. it is not granted without request, going on the draft that was. Not to worry though. as i do not see a draft in the next 20 years even if things in the world worsen.

He can be drafted, IF the military knows he is the last in the family to carry on the family name, they will try not to put him in a combat role. He is however free to volunteer for one and he will not be prevented from the active pursuit of combat.

Now, if he is merely the only male child in your family, but you have first cousins (males) that can keep the family name alive, the your brother has no recourse. He will be drafted and assigned a job (mos) as the military needs require.

If the draft is enacted and he get the letter of Greetings from the draft board, he should immediately get to a recruiter and enlist. Don't wait for the reporting date for the draft.

By enlisting on his own, he will get to choose jobs etc. From cook, to tank gunner to mailman. Every civilian job has a military counterpart. Though I expect there is not much demand for tank gunners on wallstreet....

Having said that. If someone is shooting at a cook, he becomes a rifleman and will be a killing machine till it is over. Then back to cooking.

These days there are almost no reasons at all for draft exemption. A guy in a wheel chair can't go to basic training, but can serve in an office to free up another able body who can.

If things get bad, like we go to war with North Korea or Iran, there will be a draft. Our volunteer army simply is not big enough. Our population is large, but most people do not want to serve their country compare to other countries.

I believe that it's an only chiild, and I believe that it has to do with combat.

BTW, I'm a conservative but I vehemently disagree with the draft in reference to Iraq, because AIR POWER is not being used, in order to appease political correctness, and troops are being placed in harm's way instead.

Otherwise, a draft might be okay.

I'm just curious if the thumbs down means if it's a liberal opposed to airpower, or a so-called conservative who's opposed to my saying there shouldn't be a draft for Iraq. Hmm.

Everything you hear about who can and can not be drafted is a myth.

And you can stop worrying about it, because there is not a draft in effect, and there will never be another draft. Every politician in office would lose their job if there was ever another draft, so believe me, they will not enact one.

It is extremely unlikely a draft will ever happen again. And no, there is no law or exception for being the lone male.

Sorry, not an only child, off he would go, and if you are of age get ready to suit up yourself. My sister thinks my nephew is safe as an only child. Not so.
