is it ok to buy your girlfriend a gift card for christmas or is it better to get them a gift, i need to know soon.

No, that's like saying "I Don't know you well enough to get you something so go buy yourself something"
It seems very impersonal.
I think it would be alright if you got her other things to go along with it and stuck the gift card in a card or something and then took her there after giving her the other present/s but by itself she might be like 'cool... thanks....'

Well, I think it depends on your gf. If she likes a particular store and you know she does not mind gift card, then why not.
Yet, if I was in your shoes, I would get her a gift too. That way, she can have what she wants (via gift card) and gets something that I want to give her (the gift).

Gift - absolutely not a gift card - might as well give cash... very bad idea!!!
To her, the point of the gift is how much thought & caring went into it - not necessarily how much it cost you (if cost is all she cares about, dump her). A gift card - like cash means absolutely no thought whatsoever.

Do not get a giftcard. There is absolutely NO thought or meaning in that gift. It's your girlfriend, think about what she likes or get something that has meaning.

Gift cards are fine, especially to 'girlie' places, like Victoria Secret. NOT TO WAL-MART!
