It's a safer area than the ones you'll pass through on the way there with the drug dealers, crack heads, and hookers on every corner. Kidding aside, New York City is very safe, more so than most cities. Don't believe everything you hear.

it most definitely doesn't have the presence it once had, But they're still there .
Interestingly enough one of the things that makes Little Italy the very safe area it is , is the possibility of local acts of retribution for any common criminal dumb enough to negatively disrupt the the flow of tourist dollars.People don't spend money in areas they don't feel safe in, so Little Italy is safe.
You may also want to check out Arthur Avenue in the Bronx- just don't do it on Sunday, most of the shops are closed.

It's safe. It's basically just a tourist attraction now. The mafia stuff is part of the history and those people do exist in NYC but it's nothing you need to worry about.

If there were such a thing as a Mafia, it'd still be a safe neighborhood. Possibly one of the safest. (Reason being - no common thug wants to risk the wrath of a connected guy.) There's a neighborhood in Brooklyn where several Mercedes are left unlocked and no one touches them.

Little Italy isn't a actual Italian community and hasn't been for decades. that's basically some blocks with eating places and memento shops, exists only for travelers, and is gradually being swallowed up with the help of the boom of Chinatown.
