I do not understand why someone would want to alter a baby's hair texture. In America where I live, the majority of people who use chemical relaxers use them just for manageablity to achieve a wider range of styles. I have had relaxers in the past, but now opt to wear my naturally curly hair. There are many reasons why chemical relaxers can be wrong for the hair, such as the hair becoming overprocessed, dry, brittle, beautiful curly textures ruined forever, scalp burns, allergic reations, the list goes on. But if you are that concerned about what others think of you using relaxers, than maybe deep down you are questioning yourself.

Chemical Relaxers can be very damaging to one's hair if put in improperly or not cared for well. I've have never heard of a baby (I'm assuming under 2) getting a relaxer. This concerns me not just because I'm an American but because it is impossible to know a child's true hair texture until they are a little bit older so if one is putting a relaxer in a baby's hair they are in fact altering the child's texture and possibly irreparably damaging the child's hair before they get a chance to grow up.
Relaxers are used in America to alter hair texture from straight to curly or to relax kinky or unmanageable hair...for adults.
People can do what they want to their hair, you're right. It's their perrogative. You're making an assumption about their being a fuss in America. Perhaps it's the limited people you've come into contact with. I think it's more a question of having healthy hair. Chemical relaxers in general do not necessarily promote healthy hair.

There are two reasons - a health related one, and a political one.
Healthwise, it's not a good idea to put strong chemicals in a child's hair.
Politically, some African Americans feel that it is wrong to make our hair like White people's hair. Those folks don't think that ANY Black woman, child or adult, should use relaxer, just on principle.

Using it on babies is almost as bad as child abuse.. Adults get it done and come out with chemical burns, scabs, oozing spots, hair damage, thinned hairlines due to chemical overprocessing ect..
yet it's ok to do that to a little baby or small child... sighs
I remember comming home with big burnt scabs on my scalp when i was in high school and college and getting relaxed @ the salon... It happened to all my friends too.. Too bad we didn't know any better and thought that was what ALL black women had to do like a rights of passage and totally normal.
There's nothing normal about it.
