I think three is ideal. A three-year-old isn't really a "baby" anymore and can be helpful to you. By then, the child is most likely potty-trained so you won't be dealing w/2 babies in diapers, which will make your life easier, trust me!
And you won't have the jealousy and clinginess that you might if the older child was only 1 or 2. Of course, there'll be some problems w/the older one still wanting mommy's love/attention, but you can explain things to a 3 yr. old that a 1 or 2 yr. old would have more trouble understanding: such as that mommy has enough love for both of you and that you can be the big brohter/sister helping teach the new baby.
Hope this helps!!

Every family is different. Our boys are just under 2 years apart (as is my hubby and his brother). They play together now and I'm looking forward to them having a close relationship throughout life. Also, I liked that I gave my body just enough time to recover but not enough time to worry about the weight gain, etc. Now that I'm done, I can work on myself and not worry about getting pregnant again. It's also nice that I don't have to hold on to baby stuff forever. On the other hand, its tough having two little ones that require so much attention. Two in diapers is no picnic either (although I've also heard that once you get one out of diapers you don't want to go back there). Some of my friends that have a larger age span like that the older siblings can help take care of the younger siblings. Anyhoo, 2 years works for us. We wouldn't change a thing.

3 years is a good amount of time. Sometimes when they're closer than that, they lose their "baby" status and become big brother or big sister. I say, give them plenty of time to be babies. It's so short lived anyway!

4 or 5yrs apart that way you or any parent has time to get used to the previous child and earn some money to make way for the new one
