Can I use semi sweet chocolate chips instead of semi sweet baking squares

Candy making is pretty labor intensive. I would make the recipe as is - no substitutions or shortcuts - in order to avoid a huge let down after all your hard work. You can always experiment later with a second batch. Furthermore, I think the chips may have a higher fat content than the baking chocolate, once it's melted it may not mold up again.

Semi sweet chocolate chips have a limited use, for baking and some melting recipes. I tried making truffles with them and the fat content tended to make them kind of grainy, not quite edible.

My recommendation -- no substitutions.
