It depends on a great many factors; the state in which the offense was committed, the offense, priors, school & social records.
The records in most states are not cleansed when the minor comes of age, no.

The law does vary from state to state. Generally speaking, only serious adult crimes haunt juveniles for the rest of their lives. For example, murder and rape convictions are considered so serious that juveniles are treated as adults.
Stealing a candy bar won't continue to be on record after becoming 18.

No, it will always be on his record. However, it will be difficult to get without a judges approval. If he has another run in with the law, the court will see it. If he ever tries to get a job requiring a national security chack, they will see it. THe good thing is, that it sounds like he only got charged... without a trial, there is no conviction (unless parents made a plea agreement)

In Florida a juvenile's record is sealed at age 18, particularly for misdemeanors. Not sure about felonies.

you might be able to have your record "sealed" or otherwise cleared as far as insurance and businesses are concerned. But it will never be totally clean. For example if you apply to be a police officer they will see your entire record, including what you did as a juvenile.

It will be traceable. My father applied for a job, and they traced his "joyride" with his friend's car when he was in fifth grade.
