Now I dont ve any doubt that A 540 is the best camera which fulfils all my parameters. I am ready 2 buy this model. But....

2 day I have visited 2 different "Authorised Dealer" of Canon in Kolkata, India (Esplanade). The MRP of 540 is Rs 14500. 1 quoted a price of Rs. 12500(incl. Tax) another Rs. 12000(incl. Tax). Again I visited another shop (in the same locality) which is not the "Authorised Dealer" of Canon but sells Kodak, Fuji digicams and is a good shop. It quoted a price of Rs. 11500(incl. Tax). It will provide the bill, warranty card etc... Now the questions r:

1. Can it give me fake models of A 540?
2. Should I buy frm the "Authorised Dealer" by paying Rs. 500 xtra.
3. Will the price of Canon Cameras fall drastically in the next yr after the realease of new models?(If so I'm ready 2 wait 4 a few days)

Really I'm baffled. Please help. I'll forever ramain grateful to u 4 all ur valuable posts.

Yours

1. I am not aware that there have ever been fake cameras manufactured, other than copies of Leicas no longer in production. Cameras aren't like designer perfumes, watches etc.

2. I would, however, be concerned about buying other than from an authorised dealer. The price for this camera in the UK from Amazon is £125, and that (at the prices you quote) gives us about Rs95 - 100 = £1. So the Rs500 difference is chicken feed. Stick with the authorised dealer and you can be sure you are not getting a 'gray import'

3. The price of all digital cameras is falling drastically. I paid over £800 for my DSLR two years ago - the equivalent would cost me half that now. So the question is how long do you want to wait?

Hi, no problem at all, Visit the shops again. Go to the authorised distributor, closely and seriously have a detailed look into the camera and accessories supplied ask about the warranty feature and also u can ask for the best price, U can offer a bargain price too, If he is ready it is good enough else go to the cheapest quotation and re inspect his camera too compare the too and I hope if u don't find any difference regarding the quality and guarantee, Just buy it asking the dealers guarantee of money back for the forged one.
The difference is normal, as it occurs due to evasion of Taxes and duties, Customs duty and taxes.

SUdip,

It will be almost impossible to find fake models. But an authorized dealer will assure of the following:
1) What you get is brand new
2) You get post sales "Canon" service in case something is wrong with the camera (waranty).

If you do not but from an authorized dealer (called buying from the "grey market"), you run the risk of:
1) What you buy may not be brand new. The camera could be slightly used, or repaired.
2) No after sales service. Chances are, if there is something wrong with the camera, they will insist to have it repaired instead of replacing it. If you buy grey market, you are at the mercy of the seller in terms of post sales service.

I always buy from authorized dealers even if their prices are slightly expensive. ANd I will buy second hand instead of buying from grey market.

Camera prices have already dropped significantly in the recent years. I can even say that the megapixel race is over. Now, manufacturers are trying to look for new technology to justify the high prices of new releases. In Canon's case, they have developed cameras with a "Digic III" technology which assures a cleaner image especially under high ISO settings. The A540 employs a Digic II technology which is very good. The cheapest Canon point and shoot with the Digic III is the SD800 IS.
