Pet injury?
my kitten fell off the kitchen table onto a carpeted floor. she is hiking up her hind leg, and crying on occasion, she will sit on my lap, lay on her side that appears injured and still purrs. how would i spot a break? i am concerned taking her to a vet if it may not be a broken bone because of how expensive a visit can be (plus she has no shots, indoor cat). Is there anything i can look for to spot a potentially dangerous (and painful) problem?

OK Update.
Took her to the vet and it turns out the leg was in fact broken...she is now in a splint and we are going to have to return once a week for about 5 weeks and have a new splint put on along with x-rays. She is so uncomfortable, she is crying constantly with the splint being bigger then she is!!! I'm concerned, will this effect her emotionally, is there anything i can do to help her out at this point?

Well, I hope it doesn't effect her emotionally. Here are some tips.

1. Don't panic. You will scare the kitten and yourself.
2. If you have a little bed basket, carefully lie her down in the basket and comfort her. If you don't have one, find a little cardboard box and put blankets in it.
3. Comfort her AMAP.

As
Much
As
Possible

4. Make sure she eats and drinks properly. If she doesn't, she could lose alot of weight and turn pale.
5. Hold her in your arms every 30 mins or every hour. She'll feel much more comfortable.
6. Make sure the room temperature is not freezing but warm.
7. Give her some space and make sure the room or area doesn't get too crowded. She will feel terrified and will have more pain.
8. If there is anymore pets in your house, make sure they are kept in a room or away from the kitten.
9. Make sure sharp items and dangerous objects and cords are kept away from the kitten.
10. Last, keep her accompany. Only you can help her feel nice and comfy.

But make sure her leg is okay ever minute. You never know what could happen. A broken leg is not very serious but it can be dangerous if you aren't careful. Cats aren't as traumatized as humans. When her leg is all healed, be more careful and watch out for her. Her leg is sorta weaker then the last time. Remember that!

Merry Christmas!

P.S. Best wishes to you and your kitten.

Good thing you took her in. If you can't afford to take a pet to the vet when they are hurt then you shouldn't own a pet.

No it won't hurt her emotionally. My cat did the same, she was dumped at my farm, and having never been outside she was scared and climbed a tree. She must have fallen out of it cause we found her dragging her front leg around in our yard. She wore a horrible huge cast for weeks. When they took it off all the hair was off the top of her leg. When it grew back, it came in White. (She's brown) The white hair is the only lasting effect of her ordeal.

Did the vet give you any pain meds? If not, call them up because she definitely should be getting pain meds. It will take a few days for her to get used to the splint. In the meantime, keep petting her and holding her to calm her down a bit.

I just want to say how wonderful it is to see someone being responsible for their animal. I have read some very disturbing yahoo questions tonight, and its good to know there are still good people out there that care just as much if not more about thier animals than they do themselves. Merry Christmas!
Oh yeah, The vet can prescribe pain meds...since she is a kitten make sure you follow the dosages so they are lethal...good luck to you and your kitty

Oh, there is really only one thing you can do! Just pet her, show her your love. Indeed, this is just a broken leg. It will heal faster than you think. Just don't worry about it! She'll be okay in a month! After all, we all struggle sometimes! Look out for her! And merry christmas!

Good for you for taking her to the vet. Ask them if there's anything you can do for the pain. In the meantime, give her lots of attention and love. She will probaby be okay. Kitties are not as easily traumatized as humans.

You probably know this but just to be safe, do NOT try to give her human aspirin or tylenol as it is poisonous to cats. Unless the vet recommends small amounts. Don't do it yourself.
