it starts with difficulties to breathe normally, pressure in the chest, irritability, depression. Your mind loses grip of reality, confusion, helplessness.

Make sure you're talking anxiety attacks vice panic attacks. A panic attack involves the feeling that you are going to die. Anxiety attacks are a few levels below that. I had a panic attack one time when I was visiting NYC. I had been partying all weekend, doing a lot of drugs, hadn't slept for 3 days. I drank a whole bunch of fruit punch gatorade, because I thought I was going to die from dehydration. Then I went to the bathroom and the gatorade went out the other end -- I thought I was bleeding to death, called 911. Anyway, my pulse was 220, blood pressure thru the roof, etc. I was told if I called 911 again they'd send me to bellevue.

My anxiety attacks: I get chills with waves of hot flashes that make me break into a light sweat. My heart rate goes up and I breathe erratically. I get a tickle in my throat and it feels like it closes up a little bit, making it harder to breathe. Sometimes it feels like my stomach is tightening up and my chest feels constricted.
My panic attacks: All the same symptoms as above but they move much faster, almost immediately, into something worse. I start hyperventilating or I forget to breathe and feel like I'm suffocating and I see black spots, my eyes start rolling around, I sometimes throw up, I have racing thoughts that I should kill myself because I'm going to die any second anyway and things are just so unbelievably bad and I just want it to end. I shake, cry and have delusional thinking. Sometimes I freeze out of fear.

They can vary tremendously. Nervousness, shortness of breath, chest tightness, racing thoughts, "bad" thoughts, worrying, insomnia, tremor, inability to concentrate, and even in severe cases, anxiety can lead to depression. I do not want to advocate one kind of treatment over another, but I know for me, therapy and xanax have worked tremendously well. Good luck to you!!

Along with the physical symptoms you can also feel like "you're going crazy" or something dreadful is going to happen.

Worrying a lot over stupid things you never used to worry about. Lack of sleep. Pacing up and down the hall. Like another poster said... leads to depression.
