If you feel that you are unable to cope with your problems and your quality of life is suffering, then by all means, get thee to a pyschiatrist! There is still a stigma attached to the label of 'mental illness' and it shouldn't be there. Nobody is immune to depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc. These problems are partly biological and partly enviornmental. If you don't have the right brain chemicals, or the right coping skills, it will be a much longer and harder journey to healing.
Some reasons that a person might want to see a mental health professional might be feelings of persistant sadness, feeling like harming themselves or others, hearing voices/seeing things that aren't there, chemical addictions, impulse control problems, etc.
A lot of people are going through the same things that you are, even though you may feel very alone right now. Keep your chin up and don't give up!!!

the best reason is because you think you might need to.
A psychiatrist can prescribe medications for mental illnesses such as depression and others. A Psychologist is the Dr. you go to to unload and talk to, transferring all of what is bugging you so that you can move on. Sometimes you go to both for a combo of talking it out and taking mild meds for depression or anxiety. Your Dr. can better refer you to your specifics.

To overcome divorce or relationship issues
To help find yourself
To learn ways to forgive and not hold onto pain

So many reasons really.

They help in treating disorders. A psychiatrist can help in solving most immediate behavorial problems, while a psychologist can asses or identify problems.
When in doubt...

What type of problems are you having difficulty with? I would look into different professionals and how they go about treatment.
