it is easily said that in order to love others, you must first love yourself.
I believe the opposite and that's what makes life meaningfull to me. Am i right?

To love someone, you must be able to give something of yourself. If you don't like yourself, you don't have a thing to give to someone you love. In other words, you don't have anything positive to contribute to a real loving relationship. Definitely love yourself first.

"If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with..."
I always hated that song (Stephen Stills-- was never a big fan!) but he does have a point. You are ALWAYS with yourself. If you aren't 100 percent happy within yourself, how can you share happiness with anyone else? If you don't know what love is, if you don't treat yourself with love, how can you give/share that feeling with anyone else?
Without learning what love is and living it, I don't see how it's possible to give that feeling to anyone else. Without the deep personal experience and self-awareness, you'd just be "going through the motions" -- acting out rather than truly living (and giving) it.
What about that other phrase: "To thine own self be true."

What do you mean you believe the opposite?
I believe it's possible to love others without loving and respecting yourself.

I do not love myself. I hope to cast off my mortal weaknesses and focus completely on Jesus, whom I love and who loves me.
So, I think you are right. But you will never know true love unless you love Jesus first of all. Put aside all your worldy possessions and give your life to Him.
