Labrador Retrievers are the absolute greatest dogs, Congratulations. My yellow Lab is a year and I can tell you that they have tons of energy and they do love to chew. Your Lab will be a lot quieter and less destructive if you give him plenty of exercise and something to chew on. The Kong toys are great toys to get. The puppy will not be able to chew the toy up but it will keep him occupied trying to get the treat out. It was one of the first toys I got my Lab and he still has his puppy kong. That along with a cloth that you freeze helps with teething.
Crate training is also one of the best things you can do for your puppy and house. It will help prevent your puppy from chewing something he should not and also aides in house training. They cry for awhile but my dogs would rather be crated when we are not home . They feel safer.
Labs love to swim and retrieve. My Lab will do anything to get in water and will spend hours playing fetch. I even got him his own kid pool for the summer. Their favorite thing to do is to be with you, they are very affectionate, and it means the world to them to spend time with you. The more time they get the better they are. Even though they get big they will always believe they are a lap dog.
Balls, kongs, teething sticks are all great things for them. You want to start training as soon as you can. I got my Lab at 7 weeks and by 8 1/2 he was house trained. They are very intelligent and easy to train. At a year he knows over 75 words and commands and it was easy. As far as house training it is alot of repition and praise. I got the potty pads that smelled like grass for the house. Their bladders are not developed so there will be accidents. With the grass scented pads you do not confuse them on odors. Make sure your puppy goes out after he eats, drinks, sleeps and plays, and around every half hour. Always go out the same door so he knows where to go when he has to go out. Always lavish him with praise when he is good and a stern verbal scolding works for when he is wrong.
Labs have a tendency to put weight on very easy. Right now you want to be feeding him a good food so he gets the proper nutrition for growth. Royal Canin is a great food and as an adult they make a special formula for Labs that addresses their needs. I like Royal Canin's puppy food because they have a 2 stage puppy food that addresses the puppy's needs at that time. Right now I have my dogs on a strict holistic diet I got away from the commercial foods. Holistic is expensive but is a great way to. Just as your Lab grows keep an eye on his weight. I also gave my Lab puppy vitamins. I would sugest that, they arenot very expensive but they really help.
The more exercise you give the Lab the better temperment he will be and the less destructive too. Keeping their weight in check helps prevent hip problems which the breed is known for.
They are the greatest dog , good luck

You should have already done research on the breed and had stuff for the puppy before you bought him. Labs are engergetic dogs. If you got one with lots of hunting in its background, he may be very hyper and jump all over. They will usually mellow out as they get older, but that could take a few years. My lab has always been very calm. Labs love to swim, so you could get him a kiddie pool to splash in when its warm outside. Get him lots of toys to chew on. Do a toy cycle (switch toys out ) so that he always has something "new" to play with and that will help to keep him from chewing up your stuff. Get him a spot to call his own, cages are very helpful and it gives the dog a den and a place to put him if people who don't appreciate hair all over their clothes come over. It also helps with housetraining because dogs don't like to soil where they sleep. Make sure the pup gets a lot of exercise. Be very consitent with your training. If you let one thing pass because you don't feel like dealing with it (like letting him on the couch and you don't want him to be on the couch as an adult), you just lost the battle and possibly the war. Good luck and enjoy your pup, they grow up so fast. And in the words of Bob Barker : "Help control the pet population, have your pets spayed or neutuered."

a nice bed, lots of chew toys, but only in the shape of things that you want the dog to chew on, (not shoes, but bones) rawhide is good while teathing, a good vet, teach him to fetch early, don't throw the dog in the water as it will scare him to much. and provide a loving home.
