since your original choice was for a parakeet, I think that's what you most want!

I'll give you pros and cons of both:

A hamster is undeniably cute, as are all the animals of the gerbil family. Rats will actually bond strongly wiht you, but a hamster is a solitary creature with no strong social structure in the wild. He is happy on his wheel, will be okay with you petting it and stuff. But they are not as interactive as parakeets.

Parakeets require a little more work- but they are very pretty as well. They are interactive, and can whistle tunes though they may not talk as well. They can be extremely affectionate- something I always thought hamsters lacked.

A Parakeet. They are very hardy,so a properly cared for Parakeet, will seldom become ill. They are very companionable, and their amusing acrobatic antics are an endless source of interest. With time and patience you will be able to teach these little characters all sorts of tricks. They also have the ability to talk. Great fun!

Hmmm. Hard choice, though my bias opinion is that you do get so kind of rodent. LOL. I've had hamsters, I have a parakeet right now... but my favorite pets have always been my gerbils. I think rodents are easier to take care of.... and SO much fun. But ultimately, it is your choice...and like the other guy said, if you were set on a parakeet...maybe you should get one.

Depends, how much money do you have? What kind of a cage do you have? Is it big enough for a parakeet? They need a cage that is at least 18X18X18 inches.

The first vet visit will cost from $50 to $250. Do you have that money ready? Will you have money in the coming months and years if it gets sick?

Hamsters are cuter and more love able but your downfall is no cedar shavings in the cage because they get a upper respiratory infection and they can die of wet tail if not properly taken care of, a bird is easier to listen to because it sings and is just a joy to have at times but is also a huge responsibly and if a keet gets scared to much it can have a heart attack.
