For Christmas Lunch I always have a bottle of Amarone. Barolo is also excellent with Barbera D'Asti bringing in the field.

Starting from the North of the boot to the south: Barolo, Barbaresco, Gattinara (these three are from Piedmont ); Chianti Classico Riserva, Brunello di Montalcino, Sassicaia, Ornelaia, Masseto (these are from Tuscany) Taurasi (this one is from Campania, and is somewhat lower in stature than the ones I mentioned). Aglianico delle Vulture (Basilicata, also not as famous as the others)
Finally, Sicily is beginning to produce some of the finest wines in Italy with producers such as Regaliali and Planeta.
For white wine I would go with some Gavi's (Piedmont) or Falagnina (Campania).

There is no clear cut answer to as what is the best. It's all about preference. If you know absolutely nothing about wine, you're not going to learn all you need to by posting a question on yahoo. haha
I'd start out with a Chianti.

Is not the best or worst. The difference is kind and texture, region, grapes, body and so one.The abruzzi region has the best grapes.Sangiovese is a good choice.Chianti ( rich body wine) is the second.Merlot and Canaiolo are good too.
