Ballistic is a bit over the top, but he was probably concerned that hot water is often stored and heated in a tank, rather than coming directly from the main pipes. The problem with that is that water can go stagnant and tanks can have nasty stuff in them such as flies, dead pigeons and rats. Of course being a hot water tank would also mean that potentially hazzardous germs and microbes will flourish in that environment and not all can be killed simply by boiling a kettle! It is safer and more advisable to use clean fresh cold tap water from the mains. Some people say boiling water kills all the germs - I doubt it, but bottom line - if I took a crap in a pan of water, would you boil it and make a cup of tea from it? That's probably the last thing the drowned pigeon did in your water tank. Just use the cold tap - better safe than sick.

Best to boil in a kettle. Hot water has been sitting around a while and is not boiling so bacteria has a chance to grow and is therefore not good for you. I am going hypo, have to go now. Sorry, Lucozade calls.

Depends on what country you are from, like here in Germany the water is hot enough to actually make tea from the tap,but in the States the water isn't as hot so we have to boil it.

Cold water comes from the mains supply so it has all the nice chemicals and mind-control drugs the government wants you to consume right there, fresh. Hot water comes from a tank your heating system makes hot - the water can stand in the tank for a while and certain bacteria can breed in it. And rats and spiders and things sometimes get into it.

Cold water out of the tap comes straight from the mains and therefore has not been stored for any length of time. The water from the hot tap has been standing in the tank for a considerable time and therefore not pure enough to drink.

The water from the hot tap is not from a closed tank. It is not as sterile as cold which does come from an enclosed tank.

The cold water comes from the main supply so is therefore fresh. The hot water is held in the storage tank and could have been sitting for some time.

it's not hot enough & will not brew the tea properly, boiling it removes impurities. I think also you should only use the cold tap for the kettle as it's better quality than then the hot water tap.
