"The truth is that with so many different religions giving their followers the right to believe that everyone else is going to hell, it removes value from humanity. It cause disharmony between man and damages our species. The worlds great religions are not designed to do this, but, new religions are being developed all the time to make the followers feel like some elite person that can judge others. So, atheists now feel compelled to "evangelize" themselves. And this their humanist responsibility. Stop the hate... "
I answered this to another question as to why atheists hang around R&S...

I think it's also to gain a sense of special identity by comparing ourselves to others, feeling a sense of moral and intellectual superiority. Ironically, we engage in the same sense of specialness-seeking and separation, deluding ourselves with higher purposes in the same way fundies do.

That is only 1 reason why I don't like religion, there are many more, the big one is because it's NOT TRUE, and we have scientific evidence now that can completely sack some of the major religions if people want to learn.
But whoever you quoted is only partially right about the judging thing. Religion was not created so you could judge others, it was created so someone could unify a large population with a similiar belief and gain power (thus you'll notice the large emphasis on BELIEVING and not being a good person). Unfortunately in other regions (for example Europe and Northwestern Asia was christianity), they were teaching a different belief system to unify their population: (middle east was islam). When these two people noticed the difference in their beliefs tons of violence followed throughout the whole early-late middle ages, nepoleanic era even and into the present day. People are still fighting for gods that are completely made up....and it is sad. But now, through science, we can come up with rational theories about questions that had before been unanswerable, and that can unify..Every1, and not just a few regions. That's because it has something world religions don't have, sufficient evidence of their existance.

Well, it's not too far off the mark. But I don't agree with the word "evangelize" in this context. That word suggests active recruiting to a belief system. That's not what atheists are trying to do. We're basically just trying to defend against evangelism. It wouldn't bother me at all if I were the only atheist on the planet, if I didn't have to conform to others' religious beliefs. I'm pretty confident that atheists in general feel that way as well.
I have never "evangelized" for atheism. Not a single one of my posts has ever been intended to recruit others or anything of that nature, and in fact a number of my posts have been supportive of others in their religious beliefs even as I pointed out that I believe those beliefs to be false. But as this site is intended for people to give answers to questions, I have posted honest answers that challenge people's faith. That's not evangelizing, it's answering honestly.

Yes I think it is important to stop the hate mongering that the religious engage in for establishing and controlling their market share.
And I disagree with your disagreement. As far back as I can research religions have always used the "Us good, Them bad" approach. The only time they preach tolerance is between members of the same faith, and even then only between the "righteous," usually it claims that all others must die. The Hebrews for example only adopted tolerance for "strangers" when they had become a nation dependent on foriegn traders coming into their cities. Before that they considered it both a right and a duty to kill nonbelievers and take their stuff.

The truth is that the faiths themselves are incompatable - you either believe in Jesus or you don't. To those who believe, all others are going to hell.
Likewise, you either believe in Islam or you don't - those who do not will go to hell.
No room for compromise.
So if you are looking for the cause of dishormony, it is not because of SOME faiths. Rather, it is because of FAITH itself.
As an athiest. I see a world that is inevitibly going to clash (either again and again, or one time in a great fireball of nucleur explosions).
I see wacko religious people trying to turn the US into a Theoracy or pass their religious laws over everyone else.
I see religious people destroying science because they know it contradicts their beliefs.
I often see otherwise intelligent people drop that critical thinking when it comes to their beliefs.
For this, I will not stop until they do.
EDIT: BigPappa, if you really want to know where athiests are comming from, read "The End of Faith," by Sam Harris

Many Atheists have admitted to being in this section to "unconvert" Christians...which is basically what you just said, only you put it nicer. It's not a secret that most Atheists insult and judge believers for having faith in a "sky fairy" as you guys love to put it. Then you claim that your beliefs are 100% true and that anyone who thinks otherwise is a redneck moron....now that sounds familiar...don't you guys accuse the Christians of being judgmental and pushy with their beliefs? Don't you guys always complain about how you just want to live your happy life without anybody trying to change the way you think?
Maybe you guys do this because most of you use to be Christians yourselves and denying God all together is just your way of rebelling from what ma and pa shoved down your throats while growing up.
and I don't belong to any organized religion but still believe in God, that is possible you know.

The bottom line is that in the 21st century institutionalised religion focusing on dogma is an anachronism. I don't respect it, I don't fear it I just view it as rubbish-utter, meaningless crap and I want rid of it from society. I'm not going to show tolerance towards it and I am going to challenge it and contribute in any small way I can to damaging it in order to bring about its demise, and that includes making financial donations to secular groups who are actively opposing religious institutions.

Atheists hang around R&S because we enjoy debating are point against others. It has nothing to do with us feeling the need to religionize our non religion. We believe in what we can see, religious persons believe in what they can not see. It is just a natural debate point.
