The military is a fine and noble profession. It is not an east job but it has benefits. People who join the military know the risks that is why they are all volunteers.
Their sacrifice is for you so that you can ask your question no matter how intelligent or ignorant it may be. Something else you should know...
"To those who fought for it, Greedom has a taste the protected will never know."

I most certainly hope they don't watch the news. The news media couldn't get a fact straight if it bit them in the butt. Its all about ratings and selling papers with them.
People still join the military for a variety of reasons. It depends on the branch you choose, really. Its not all about killing people, though that can be part of the job. Most people join because they want to keep their country great. We have all these freedoms because of the military. How long do you think freedom and democracy would last without it? Believe it or not, the military is a good career (if you are compatible with the lifestyle). They offer decent pay, great benefits, and training in cutting edge technology. Plus they hire with no experience required and will help pay for college(no, I'm not a recruiter). That is probably why the majority join. They want a leg up on the civilian world. If you have no money for college and have few prospects for a career, the military is a good place to get started. At the very least, it gives you four years to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life. The vast majority of military jobs don't involve combat. Infantry and combat support are relatively small career fields compared to the whole.

The question you asked is pretty one- sided. "Do they watch the news" is a pretty funny thing for you to say. In fact, the media is one of the most mis-informing sources for what is going on overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as all over the rest of the world. It's pretty obvious that the media only shows you what they want everyone to see, and what they think will get the general public whipped-up into turmoil.
It's called "Sensationalism".
As for people joining the military, what is wrong with that? My Great Grandfathers, both Grandfathers, my father and my mother all chose to serve their country because they felt the need to serve their country. I also served, six years in the United States Navy on an aircraft carrier. My job was hooking airplanes up to the catapults and " Shooting" them off into the air. Day in, day out, six to nine months a year. 18 to 20 hours a day.
Everyone I know does it for different reasons. I did it to grow up and learn responsibility. I got to do what I loved as a child, and experienced so much that many only see if they have outrageous amounts of time and money, or watch too much tv, as it sounds like you do.
I'm sorry you and so many more use the media as your source of information. Having been on both sides of the 'fence', I know what the media chooses to show the masses and what they don't. If they said the sky was falling, would you believe that too??

Young men and women join the military because they feel like this country is still worth fighting for, no matter what people say. It doesn't matter whether we are in wartime or peace time. Some join to better themselves. Some join for the benefits to go to college. It really depends on the person. We all know people are dying the Middle East. In fact because of that, recruitment is going up. Whatever their reason, they are doing something noble, whether it's wartime or peacetime. We need those men and women.

Well there are many answers to that question. The only answer that I have is for why I joined. I feel that this country is worth fighting for. My family, friends and well everyone being free to have there own opinion and voice it. To travel and experience new things.
People are so negative about the war in Iraq, but they always seem to forget our history. We needed help gaining our Independence from Great Britain, and we got that help from the French. Iraq needed our help and that is what we are doing. Yes our people are dieing over there and no one wants to see that, but we are making a difference over there. I have seen it first hand. The gratitude on there faces, the smiles as you drive by. It makes it all worth it. So you really have to ask yourself, why am I not doing more to help them.

Right now not many people joining the military because the problems in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This is how in US, many people not getting job and they are joining the military. They get their paycheck, see another countries, most get free housing, GI Bills, VA Loans, College, Health Insurance, all that. It is good, but when it's getting serious, than you need to think about it. I'm quiet sure they all watching the news, but also the patriotic thinking, that's free for everyone.

I think most people join the military because they want to serve, just as people become doctors, nurses, firefighters & c. That's why I joined. I just retired after 37 years.
I hate to see how the military is misused by the politicians. The purpose of the military is to protect the US, not to engage in undeclared wars with countries that haven't attacked us.
In like manner, I feel them same about seeing doctors performing abortions. Doctors are supposed to save lives, not take them.

There are countless reasons why people enlist. Some people unfortunately feel that the military is their only option to make a living/ find a way 'out'
As the same time, we should all feel blessed that we have citizens in our country who are willing to risk their lives to protect this country. Be thankful for the people who do this because we would be in a crap load of more trouble if we didn't have them.
