The vocal cords are damaged or inflamed.
If you get a bad cold or flu they will get inflamed and you can't talk.
If you have surgery, sometimes the vocal cords are damaged and you can't talk. The good new is they heal and most people do get their voice back.

you either have cold/flu or your vocal chords/larynx is damaged.
