Shellfish contain high amounts of heavy metals like lead and mercury, which can cause brain damage in the unborn and has been linked to autism.

As long as you are certain you are not allergic to shellfish, it is perfectly fine to eat prawns during a pregnancy. Prawns and other shellfish have low levels of mercury, a common concern with seafood and pregnancy. Prawns are also an excellent source of protein which is important during a pregnancy. Make sure however, that the prawns have been thoroughly cooked to kill off any harmful bacteria that may be on it. My last source is a recipe for spicy prawns! Have a happy and healthy pregnancy! And Congratulations!

Oysters and other shellfish (like prawns) should be avoided during pregnancy, unless they are part of a hot meal and have been thoroughly cooked. This is because, when they are raw, these types of seafood might be contaminated with harmful bacteria and viruses. These are usually killed by proper cooking.
For seafood safety at home, you should cook most seafood to an internal temperature of 63 degrees C / 145 degrees F for 15 seconds. If you don't have a thermometer, the guidelines listed below can help you to determine whether seafood is done.

I heard that prawns are not safe to eat during pregnancy? Is this true?
There are many health benefits from eating seafood. It is an exceptional source of high quality protein and essential vitamins and minerals, but is generally low in calories, saturated fat, and sodium. However, many fish contain varying levels of substances that are thought to be toxic to the body. These substances include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and methylmercury (MeHg). Because of this, it is recommended that woman who are pregnant, may become pregnant or who are nursing should eat fish that is low in these substances especially mercury. Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish. Also, Crustacea (including prawns, lobsters, and crabs) and mollusks (including oysters and calamari) generally contain lower levels of mercury. It is recommended that you eat no more than 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of healthy fish.

whats up sure it particularly is surely wonderful to devour, as i'm a great prawn lover i replaced into telling my midwife how i replaced into gagging for a prawn sarnie and she or he pronounced that's completely wonderful as long because of the fact the prawns are cooked..... and prawns that are no longer cooked are gray... in the event that they smell a sprint humorous or what have you ever then go consisting of your instincts yet different than that that's completely wonderful.

if it is cooked, yes, just watch your mercury. You cant have 20 per day, but a meal here or there is fine. Prawns are just big shrimp. They are no more harmful than the little ones on a salad, as long as they are fully cooked, of course.

Shellfish are never completely safe for anyone. All in all it is wiser to avoid higher risk foods such as these until it is only you and not your baby who has to fight the problem if you consume a 'bad' one.
May I suggest you get your husband to take you out after the birth. Find a really good spanish restaurant and have a proper paella with a bottle of rioja!
Good luck to you all!

Shellfish is one of the things that you're advised not to eat...along with...pates...soft cheeses...rare meat (steak) and processed meats. It's probably best not to. I MISS PRAWNS...just a few more weeks and I can have some!
