The study of religion is important in the study of motivation of cultures. If you truly wish to know why groups of people do things, it is important to study thier religious beliefs. Trying to understand a people without understanding their faith traditions is like trying to understand an automobile while ignoring it's power source.

Personally, the study of religions can help you understand your own much better. No current popular religion is unaffected by other earlier religions. The history of the Christian religions shows how their choice of scripture and the way they believe now, were shaped by actions and decisions made hundreds or thousands of years ago.

Religion and theology (or thealogy) are quite different things. Religion is more a sociological study, while theo (or thea) logy are studies which presuppose the existence of a God or Goddess. Christian theology is the study of the Christian God (Including the concept of the trinity). This is the sort of thing that would be studied in a seminary program rather than a sociological one.

In the end, religion is important as a study in a sociological program, or simply for personal growth. It can be important in a theological or seminary program where understanding the beliefs and history of others is deemed necessary.

Religion really is a fascinating subject and I recommend its study to all. That is reason enough. 'Searching for the truth' has been given in a few of your answers, truth of what? and why do people think the answer to this question lies with religion?
But I stray from the point.
Another reason for making a study of religion is that it is easy to convert religious ideas into political ideals, and get yourself a well paid job in politics.
When you have a bunch of people willing to believe all the religious stuff, a little nudge will have them believe anything!
Another very good reason to study religion is that you have a really good knowledge of comparative religions then you have a ready reply to any questions that may contradict your own beliefs, for example "check the bible, chapter so and so, verse such and such, this is clear 'proof' of your own point) and could get you a job as a religious leader or guide .
You may have guessed by now that am atheist? but that doesn't mean I'm not fascinated by religion, I really am, I wish I could understand peoples need to belive in all this BS.

Because some people (like me) find it fascinating. I study the history of religion. It is interesting to see the first religions of the world and how various religions came to be. It is also fascinating to see how religion affects people. How wars are based on religion, etc. Many times, the actions of people are based on religion. In this way, it is a study of people.

I study for the interest of knowing people, who and what they are, and why. I have a Christian background, studied and accepted Judaism, and now have a teacher for Islam. I find it all fascinating, and other than the concept of Jesus as a prophet, have found Judaism and Islam have much in common.

When you're interested in understanding, with an open mind, what others believe. When you're hunting for a comfortable philosophy that makes sense to you. To understand the one you're currently practicing in more depth... all KINDS of reasons.

Entertainment. It's quite amusing to see the crazy myths people still believe in during the 21st century!

Especially when we have the internet right here, and many online knowledge bases, which can instantly refute the claims of many religions.
