Sounds like contact dermititis which is an allergy to something in contact with your skin. Did you change laundry detergent or start using a new soap or body lotion? If nothing has changed you have developed an allergy to something you have been using for a long time. You can use Benedryl tablets to reduce the reaction and use Hydrocortisone cream locally to reduce the itching. and DON'T SCRATCH because open skin areas can get infected.

What causes it?
There are many causes for itch, from insect bites and parasitic infestations such as scabies, to skin conditions such as eczema, or generalised conditions such as jaundice or leukaemia. Environmental conditions and contact with irritant chemicals can also cause itching.

In most cases something (for example, insect venom) triggers the release of chemicals including histamine from cells within the skin. These chemicals stimulate specific nerve fibres that carry the sensation of itch. The skin may then become red, inflamed and even itchier.

Almost everyone experiences itchiness now and then but it's more likely in people who suffer from atopy or a high risk of allergic disease.
