With an attractive mediterranian climate and a west coast location where you can actually observe the sun rising over the ocean water, San Pedro is a town filled with a special ambiance.
Though certain blocks near the port's edge should be avoided at night, the town is quite safe overall. One can become street smart fairly easily in San Pedro.
As you move away from water's edge you climb in elevation to nicer, safer neighborhoods. Growing up nearby in the 70's, I remember San Pedro asa poorer town with shabby homefronts though by the late 1990's things had dramatically improved with most homes and apt buildings either rebuilt or intensily refurbished.
San Pedro lies at the southeast end of the Palos Verdes Penninsula and has numerous oppotunities for shopping, dining, live music and especially the seaside leisure oppurtunities. Among my favorites are the harbor cruises and boats to Catalina Island.
One San Pedro landmark is the Vincent Thomas Bridge, a 1,500-foot long suspension bridge linking San Pedro with Terminal Island and named after California Assemblyman Vincent Thomas. Nearby is the Los Angeles Maritime Museum, the largest maritime museum in California, as is the museum ship SS Lane Victory, a fully operational victory ship of World War II and National Historic Landmark.
The Frank Gehry designed Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is also in San Pedro. The Point Fermin Lighthouse, a Victorian-era structure built in the late 19th century, still exists as a museum and park on a bluff overlooking the ocean. The Korean Bell of Friendship is a massive bronze memorial bell donated by South Korea in 1976 to the people of Los Angeles.

San Pedro is a town located in the city of Los Angeles, but your mail would say San Pedro, CA. If your mail said Los Angeles but had the correct zip code for San Pedro, you'd still get your mail. In fact there is even a sign on 25th St, as you come from Palos Verdes that says you are in Los Angeles City limits. San Pedro does not have a mayor, it's own police or school district, it's the LAPD and LAUSD and the mayor is the LA Mayor.

It's about as close to the port of Los Angeles as your going to get. It's actually part of it. It's not any more "seedy" or "dangerous" than any other place. You have Ports of Call Village which is very nice. Many shops and restaurnats to visit. Whale watching tour boat trips, fishing and excursion boats. There's a nice park nearby. Point Ferman.

There are many nice hotels near the port. I have stayed there a couple of times with no problems. The Ports O' Call Village is nearby and is a good place to have diner prior to a cruise. Most hotels give free transportation to the port.
I stayed at the Best Western Sunrise Hotel.

I just moved here and I am REALLY regretting it. There is a vibration coming off the port all through the night that would drive anyone up the wall. I don't know how people live here.

Parts of it aren't real great, but there are some fun places there. The downtown area has some great restaurants too - my favorite is the Whale and Ale.
