YES, these two Dyson models are the absolute best for dog (and people hair):
Dyson DC15 The Ball Animal Bagless
Dyson DC14 Animal Bagless
The difference between the two is that the DC15 model has "The Ball" technology which is a pivoting mechanism to zigzag around furniture and make your wrist do less work. Both are unbelievable at picking up hair and supposedly never lose suction.

OH MY Gosh. I bought a DYSON and it is hands down the best vacuum on the planet. We bought a house and the previous owners had a dog. You could tell that they vacuumed the carpet because you could see the lines...I vacuumed with my new DYSON and got more hair and more hair and more hair. It was kind of freaky how clean the carpet looked but the hair kept coming. I LOVE MY DYSON. It was expensive but it is sooooooooo nice how clean it gets the carpet.

just as everyone else has recommended a dyson- i have a dyson animal, two medium length fur cats, a long haired cat and a dog and it works a treat! It also eliminates bugs and filters SO efficiently...the number on the box is DC08-i think that is the model number!!! Get one you will be amazed and the best thing is if it breaks dyson buy it back for parts (apparently anyway).

Any Dyson with a powered brush head. The powerful spinning brush is great for brushing the hair out of the carpet, and saves you much vacuuming effort, since you merely draw it slowly across the floor rather than madly scrubbing it back and forth.

Our Dyson ball model does a great job. DON'T be tempted by the Hoover Pet-hair vacuum - it doesn't work and has a tiny capacity - needs to be emptied every few minutes.

The Oreck XL21 is what I have had for the past two years and it works like a charm with dog hair! Our dogs don't shed on a daily basis, but when I give them their hair cuts, there is a ton pile of dog hair everywhere afterwards. I just use my Oreck XL21 and it gets every last bit of it! Highly recommend!
By the way, you can't beat the Oreck's guarantee and warranty, as its competitors (not that anything compares) don't have the same kind of quality to match Oreck's.

No!
A lightly damp sponge wiped over the carpet or material (especially car seats) picks up most of them. When damp they are easier to hoover up for some reason.
Dog hairs have little barbs on them which is why they are a bugger to get out of carpets and material.
The hoovers with the animal hair removing attachments work for a while but tend to give up the ghost after a time.
